holidays

Well, I was going to write another chapter in the saga of our love story, but since the next part takes place on Valentine's Day, I think I'll wait until Thursday to write it.

This year, for our fifth Valentine's Day, I decided to get James a super-secret, super-cool, super-expensive gift! It is something I know he really wants, but I don't think he expects it at all b/c he probably doesn't think I would spend that much money on just one present. So I really hope it will be a surprise. And I'm too superstitious to say what it is on here -- just my luck, it would happen to be the week he decides to take a look at my blog (although I don't think he ever does).

Speaking of holidays, the Canadian government has decided to institute another statutory holiday -- as if we really needed another one. I don't mind another day when I get paid extra, but in Canada (land of weirdness), this means that everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING, is closed. Grocery stores, a lot of gas stations, Walmart, malls, most restaurants, even convenience stores shut down. Maybe this is a good thing, this turning away from commericialism as a way to celebrate something (not sure what). But for now, I'm too steeped in convenience to recognize the virtues....

The new holiday is called Family Day, which I'm guessing means it's supposed to be a day that families spend together. Although since I can't find any information that confirms this, it might just be a cute name. It just happens to fall on the third Monday in February -- I'm sure it's just a COINCIDENCE that it falls on the same day as President's Day, a long-established US holiday that actually has a meaning (I think?). So I don't know what we will do to celebrate this illustrious holiday, although I have a feeling it might involve shoveling snow, our new daily chore. I'm pretty sure it has snowed every day in February so far, with no signs of letting up in the future. I don't know WHY I ever complained about living in Florida.....

Stay tuned later this week for installment two of our story......
